Plot Synopsis
In the late 1920s in Latvia, Anna, a young woman, falls in love with an entrepreneur. However, their consummate marriage brings jealousy and misfortune. Her husband then hides her in the forest where she bears him eight children. The Great Depression and years of war give them a big strike, Anna bravely fights with the uprising troubles and manage to raise up her children. But her mental illness exacerbates. Years later, Signe, Anna’s granddaughter, suspects that Anna committed suicide and tries to encode her secret. The truth is all the female members of the family, including Signe's cousins and herself, have been always troubled by fear, depression, guilt and self-destruction. Signe is incessantly tortured by these inherited mental illnesses and decides to fight against the curse imposed on her family.
